Grammar Bites: The past simple and past continuous
This structure is used to tell about something that happened in the past while another action was going on.
Imagine you are talking on the phone and then your mom walks into the house. You can say "I was talking on the phone when my mum walked inside."
When can go at the beginning or the middle of a sentence. Use a comma after the first verb if a sentence starts with When.
I was eating when he arrived.
When I was eating, he arrived.
